This talk will examine the FBI’s COINTELPRO (counterintelligence) program in Illinois in the late 1960s and early 1970s. As part of a nationwide investigation of civil rights, antiwar, and other groups, the FBI in Illinois routinely spied on Illinois residents from Chicago to Cairo and resorted to a host of tactics including character assassination, use of misinformation, and police harassment to undermine them. This talk will analyze those efforts.
