Decatur’s Historic Post Office Frescoes

Mark Sorensen will give an illustrated presentation about why and how Decatur got the biggest post office murals in Illinois. Who were the artists and what else did they do? What topics are depicted and why were they chosen? In what context are both Oglesby and Lincoln depicted? How well have these true frescoes held up?

Mark W. Sorensen is the Official Macon County Historian and a past board member of the Oglesby Mansion. After teaching in the Decatur Public Schools he served as assistant director of the Illinois State Archives for 21 years. He is also a past president of the Illinois State Historical Society and has had a number of articles published in ILLINOIS HERITAGE magazine. He recently finished writing short biographies of all 43 men associated with the 1920 and 1921 Staley football teams for the A.E. Staley Museum.
